Tesla Model S: Firmware Update - CHAdeMO Charging Adapter

Tesla Model S (2012-2025) Service Manual / External Charging Connectors / Firmware Update - CHAdeMO Charging Adapter

Tools required:

  • 12V power supply
  • Laptop with Toolbox 2.0 or higher
  • USB-CAN dongle
  • CHAdeMO CAN programming connector
CAN Setup
  1. Connect the USB-CAN dongle to a laptop that is equipped with Toolbox 2.0 or higher.
  2. Connect the CHAdeMO CAN programming connector to the USB-CAN dongle.
  3. Connect the CHAdeMO CAN programming connector to an external 12V power supply.
  4. Connect the CHAdeMO CAN programming connector to the CHAdeMO charging adapter.
Firmware Update

Note: It is not necessary to connect the diagnostic cable to the vehicle.

  1. In the bottom left corner of the screen, click the gray circle on the right. A popup box appears:
    1. In the Vehicle field, select Tesla CHAdeMO Adapter.
    2. In the Bus field, select SE.
    3. Ensure that the Enable Diagnostics box is checked.

    Firmware Update

  2. Click Enable.
  3. In Toolbox, selectPanels > Charging > CHAdeMO Adapter Firmware Update. Note: If the CHAdeMO Adapter Firmware Update button is not present:
    1. Select Options > Plugins
    2. Ensure that the checkbox for CHAdeMO is checked.
    3. In the top right corner of the window, click Enable.
  4. Click the Start/Play button and follow the onscreen instructions.
