Tesla Model S: Back Rest Assembly - 2nd Row - Executive (Remove and Replace)
Removal
- Remove the LH and RH lower seat cushions (refer to procedure).
- On each side of the vehicle, remove the screw that secures the
closeout panel to the seat frame (torque 5 Nm). Remove the panel
from the vehicle.
- Carefully remove the NVH pad from the vehicle.
Note: Ensure that the black portion of the pad
faces up during reinstallation.
Caution: Do not tear the NVH pad.
- Disconnect the harness and release the edge clip.
- On each side of the vehicle, release the bolt that secures the
backrest to the body (torque 26 Nm).
- Release the backrest:
- Vehicles built before April, 2015:
On each side of the vehicle, release the latches that secure
the backrest. Pull the backrest towards the front of the
vehicle.
Note: These latches are inside the backrest
and are not visible. Position your hand as shown.
- Vehicles built during and after April, 2015:
On both sides of the vehicle, reach between the seat back carpet
and C-Pillar trim panel to expose the strap. Pull the strap
straight down to release the seat.

Caution: Only pull the strap from the trunk.
Tip: If the strap is not easily accessible, move to the 2nd
row of the vehicle. Gently push the outboard edge of the
seat inboard to expose the strap, then feed the strap
between the seat and C-Pillar so that it can be accessed

Note: Before proceeding, have an assistant stand outside
the vehicle.
- Carefully pass the backrest through one of the rear door
openings to an assistant.
Installation
Installation procedure is the reverse of removal.
